Over the past few weeks, the Camrose Kodiaks have embarked on a major community relations initiative is called the ‘DQ Grill & Chill - Read To Succeed’ program, where the players and staff of the Camrose Kodiaks are actively promoting literacy to the Camrose and area youth!
The program coincides with the reading curriculum that was implemented in the month of October for the Battle River School Division and Elk Island School Division.
“The DQ Grill & Chill - Read To Succeed is one of the Kodiaks’ flagship community relations programs,” said Kodiaks Assistant General Manager, Darcy Steen. “The goal of many of the Kodiaks players is to continue their educational pursuits in the form of a scholarship, while still playing hockey at a high level. Literacy and education are the foundation of our program, and it is important for us as an organization to educate the youth in Camrose and surrounding area - the importance of gaining these skills at an early age.”
In an effort to best promote the program, and to further the Kodiaks commitment to the community, players and staff of the Camrose Kodiaks are visiting each one of the elementary schools in the City of Camrose. This includes Sparling, St. Patrick’s, Sifton, Chester Ronning, and Jack Stuart elementary schools. During these school visits, the Kodiaks players are reading to the classrooms, targeting the age groups of Kindergarten, Grade One, and Grade Two.
The teachers in each school are more than happy to support the initiative, and have the students engaged in setting and achieving their reading goals. Students who reach their reading goals are eligible to win prizes from the Camrose Kodiaks.
In an effort to further support the program, the Kodiaks players have been delivering to each of the Camrose elementary schools, a generous collection of Kodiak bookmarks. Every single student from Kindergarten through Grade 6 in these schools will receive a bookmark, which also happens to contain a special coupon for the DQ Grill & Chill in Camrose.
The ‘DQ Grill & Chill - Read To Succeed’ program will continue with a few more school visits over the next couple of weeks. Upon conclusion, the Camrose Kodiaks will announce winners of the program, and will celebrate another year of success in this important and fulfilling community initiative.
